Practical Vermiculture and Vermicomposting

Course introduction.
Organic waste can create disposal costs, odour and environmental concerns while losing potential resource value. This practical programme introduces vermiculture and vermicomposting as ways to convert suitable organic materials into useful soil inputs. Participants assess feedstocks, apply carbon-to-nitrogen principles, prepare bedding and conditioned materials, and establish or manage a worm unit. Supervised activities develop monitoring, troubleshooting and vermicast-assessment skills, covering temperature, moisture, pH and operating conditions. Participants complete an organisational implementation plan that connects an identified waste stream with vermiculture, vermicast handling and appropriate agricultural use.

Key Learning Outcomes
- Explain vermiculture principles and classify feedstocks for suitability and conditioning needs.
- Prepare bedding and feedstock using C:N, moisture, temperature and aeration principles, and establish or manage a basic worm unit.
- Monitor worm-bed conditions, identify common problems and recommend corrective action.
- Assess vermicast maturity, handling and quality and identify appropriate agricultural uses.
- Develop an Organic Waste to Vermiculture to Vermicast implementation plan for an organisational waste stream.
