Understanding Degraded Oil Palm Soils: Nutrient Lock-Up, Root Health & Biological Restoration

Course introduction.
Increasing fertiliser inputs may not resolve poor palm performance when soil structure, acidity, biology or root health limit nutrient access. This programme helps plantation teams understand degraded soils and diagnose links between soil condition, nutrient lock-up and root function. Participants examine pH, organic matter, CEC, moisture and biological nutrient cycling, using observations and basic soil-test information to distinguish symptoms from possible causes. They evaluate restoration tools such as organic matter, microorganisms, AMF and biochar as complements to sound agronomy, then develop a controlled pilot and a practical soil-health improvement plan.

- Assess field and root-zone indicators and interpret basic soil information to identify likely constraints.
- Evaluate Soil Food Web functions and biological restoration approaches using organic matter, microorganisms, AMF and biochar.
- Develop a controlled restoration pilot and a 90-Day Workplace Soil Health Improvement Plan.
